Mike Simonson has secured a full term serving as the at-large representative on the Des Moines City Council, fending off challenger Endi Montalvo-Martinez.
Simonson won 52% of the votes, with all precincts reporting, according to unofficial results from the Polk County Auditor. Montalvo-Martinez, a political newcomer who would have been the youngest councilmember, got 47%, the results show.
Simonson, 65, a retired architect, said he's proud of the progress he made in the roughly year and a half he's been on the City Council. He intends to spend his first full term continuing to address the "marching orders" Des Moines residents gave him: to tackle homelessness and affordable housing, as well as support the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) and the Des Moines Public School
