Zohran Mamdani will be New York City’s 111th mayor, the Associated Press projects.
According to the AP, with a little more than 60% of the expected vote counted, Mamdani has 49.6% of the votes, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has 41.6% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has 7.9%.
Mamdani is the first Muslim to hold the mayoral seat.
Mamdani won the Democratic primary in June to become the party’s nominee after defeating Cuomo 56.4% to 43.6% in the final round of ranked-choice voting.
He kept a steady lead in the race in the aftermath of the primary, with polls showing him ahead of Cuomo by double digits ahead of the general election.
