NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan will continue leading the city’s sheriff’s office after winning re-election Tuesday night.

Morgan, a Democrat who has served as sheriff since 2006, defeated an independent challenger with 73% of the vote compared to Francis Jacobson's 27%, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections.

Throughout his campaign, Morgan highlighted his record on reducing recidivism, addressing mental health, and expanding youth and senior programs. He said his next term will focus on addressing the growing elderly population and overcrowding at the Newport News Jail.

“More space is needed, and more space designed to deal with mental health and the medical issues that come with an aging population,” Morgan said.
