New Mexico State secured a win on its opening night, but it let Adams State hang around.
A 14-2 run from the Grizzlies during the first half, 14 made free throws from ASU and an Aggies’ streak of seven misses in eight shots allowed the former to hang around. NM State led just 43-35 at halftime despite shooting 42.5% from the floor and only allowing the Grizzlies to shoot 31%.
The Aggies (1-0) started to turn things up a notch in the second half against ASU (0-1), leading by as much as 19 at one point. However, the Grizzlies fought back and cut their deficit to single-digits, which was what NM State led by until some fouls in the final seconds. That gave the Aggies an 83-72 win on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at home.
NM State shot 37.9% from the field in the second half, good enough for 40 points.
