Incumbent Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller stopped short of winning enough votes to claim an unprecedented consecutive third term outright — instead he will face off against Darren White in a Dec. 9 runoff election.

A runoff occurs when no candidate receives 50% of the votes cast. On Tuesday, a runoff was called by Journal pollster Brian Sanderoff based on votes that had been tallied with all precincts partially reporting, with Keller capturing 37% of the vote as White took 31%.
