Shane Bieber apparently enjoyed his stay with the Blue Jays so much that he has decided to stick around for at least one more season.
According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Bieber exercised his $16 million (U.S.) player option for 2026. The former American League Cy Young award winner had until Thursday to pick up the option or take a $4-million buyout and enter free agency.
Bieber’s decision to return via the option does come as somewhat of a surprise. Considering he was already guaranteed $4 million, the 30-year-old should have been able to fetch more than $12 million on the open market and he likely would have got some lucrative multi-year offers as well.
