NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Democrats claimed a wave of resounding victories Tuesday in municipal elections across Connecticut, flipping control of key municipal offices in an off-year test of their party's strength.
In Stratford, Ansonia and Milford, unofficial vote tallies showed the Democratic candidates ousting Republican incumbents by convincing margins. The three races had been among the most hotly contested in the state.
In New Britain, a marquee battle for the open mayoral office vacated by Republican Erin Stewart was claimed by the Democratic candidate Bobby Sanchez. Stewart had held the office for more than a decade — a rare Republican who managed to prevail in a city where Democrats comprise a massive majority of the city's registered voters.
