Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani invoked India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as he addressed supporters following his historic win. Standing before a cheering crowd, Zohran Mamdani said, “Standing before you, I’m reminded of Jawaharlal Nehru’s words: ‘A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.’ Tonight, New York has done just that."

The 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist- now the city’s 111th mayor and its first Muslim leader- said New York was entering “a new era" that demanded “clarity, courage and vision- not excuses."
