Sydney Sweeney has broken her silence on her controversial American Eagle jeans campaign and the surprising support it received from US President Donald Trump.

The ad, which featured the tagline “great jeans,” sparked intense criticism earlier this year, with many calling it tone-deaf and accusing it of making light of eugenics.

Speaking to GQ, Sweeney admitted the backlash caught her off guard.

“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans,” she said.

“All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”

Sweeney said “it was surreal” that Mr Trump personally weighed in on the debate. During the height of the controversy in August, Mr Trump praised the actress after learning she is a registered Republican.
