EUGENE — The issues that were evident for Oregon in its preseason exhibitions, poor shooting and turnovers, were even worse in its season opener. Then an injury to Kwame Evans Jr. nearly turned what was a disjointed and ugly win into a catastrophe.
The Ducks led by 14 when Evans slipped and hit the deck holding his left knee with 10:33 to go and Hawaii scored the next 14 to tie it, then went ahead in what became a back-and-forth final 5:30.
Despite 21 turnovers and putrid 12.5% three-point shooting, Oregon avoided disaster and beat Hawaii 60-59 in front of 5,627 at Matthew Knight Arena Tuesday night thanks to a prolonged final possession and last second heroics by TK Simpkins.
