Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the city’s first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian heritage, and first African-born leader. He is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani, with ancestral roots in Gujarat, India. At 34, he becomes the youngest mayor in over a century. Mamdani proudly embraces his multicultural identity, identifying as both Asian and Black or African American, and values both Hindu and Muslim traditions, reflecting his Indian and African heritage and diverse upbringing in New York and East Africa.
