More powerful vehicle headlights are increasingly causing dazzling glare for motorists facing oncoming traffic, according to a Government-commissioned investigation. Consultancy TRL, which carried out the research, declared the findings demonstrate vehicle lighting represents a "genuine issue". ‌

The study encompassed more than 50 hours of nocturnal road testing using a vehicle equipped with a camera measuring headlight luminance – the quantity of light being produced – alongside additional sensors. Passengers in the test car were more prone to experiencing glare from approaching vehicles' headlights when elevated luminance levels were detected. ‌
