7-year-old Waspada (Wah-SPA-dah) lives with his mom, who is a widow, in a remote village in Indonesia. He told us it’s hard for them to find water to drink. “We usually collect rainwater in buckets,” he said.”That water usually lasted for three days. After that, Mom and I go to the forest to look for puddles to get water.”
Even at age 7, Waspada knew they had no choice but to drink the bad water. “The water from the forest was murky and had a bad smell. It gave me stomachaches and also made my skin itchy when I took a bath.”
Budima, his mom, said collecting water in the woods is difficult, and finding water in dry season was even harder. “I often said, providing food my son is hard. But adding hours a day to collect dirty water from the forest was totally exhausting.”
