A man shouted "allahu akbar" after he plowed into pedestrians and cyclists on the French island of Île d’Oléron, off the Atlantic coast, according to local prosecutors.

The French interior minister Laurent Nunez said in a post on X that two victims are in critical condition and another three are injured. The suspect is in custody, he added.

Christophe Sueur, the mayor of Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron, told BFMTV that "when we saw the vehicle—with the front completely torn off, clearly showing the intent to ram, as he did several times—I think he was fully aware of what he was doing."

“He’s someone who is known, particularly to the gendarmerie, for behavior that’s not entirely normal, and for problems with alcohol," Sueur added, originally in French.
