The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning at Saratoga Place at Palmer Ranch.

According to the agency, deputies responded around 8:53 a.m. to a 911 call from a person threatening self-harm at 5050 Central Sarasota Parkway . The first deputy arrived about 10 minutes later and found a man armed with a kitchen knife outside the residence.

Deputies said the man ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon, pointed the knife at the deputy, and advanced toward him. The deputy then fired his weapon, striking the man, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

"The deputy had no option but to respond with deadly force to protect himself," Community Affairs Manager Matthew Binkley said over email.
