Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli rallied Rohan and Gondor against Sauron. The plucky duo of Merry and Pippin, meanwhile, ensured Saruman's downfall by convincing the Ents to attack Isengard. While the breaking of the Fellowship was unforeseen, the results are difficult to argue with.
