A Larger Problem

In “ Band of Outsiders ,” published in our September 2025 issue, distinguished writer Michael Hall told the story of how a teacher at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired developed a music program tailored specifically to its students.

I enjoyed your recent article about the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. However, it calls to my mind a serious question: What happens to the aging blind citizens of our state?

When my sister who is legally blind entered a rehab-and-nursing facility after breaking a bone two years ago, I thought she would get the short-term care she needed. In all the facility’s paperwork, assessments, and “care plans,” not once was there mention of a protocol for visually impaired residents.

It’s a systemic failure.
