Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the Indian women's cricket team to his residence in Delhi on Wednesday, celebrating their historic win in the Women’s World Cup 2025. The team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, was praised for their resilience and ability to overcome early setbacks in the tournament, including three consecutive defeats and social media trolling.

During the meeting, the players proudly displayed their gold medals and the World Cup trophy. The team presented PM Modi with a special cricket jersey featuring “NaMo,” which he held up with a smile, expressing gratitude for the thoughtful gift.

Harmanpreet Kaur reflected on their previous meeting with Modi in 2017, when they had not yet won a trophy. She expressed hope that this victory would lead to more meetings in the future. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana shared how Modi's words have always inspired the team, while Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma recalled his encouragement to keep working hard towards their dreams.

PM Modi reminisced about memorable moments from the tournament, including Harleen Deol's stunning catch against England and Amanjot Kaur's crucial catch in the final against South Africa. He humorously noted that after catching the ball, Amanjot must have been envisioning the trophy.

The Prime Minister urged the players to promote the Fit India initiative, especially among young girls, highlighting the importance of fitness in combating obesity. He encouraged them to visit schools and inspire the next generation to engage in sports.

As the players prepared to return to their hometowns, Shafali Verma was set to lead the North Zone team in an upcoming T20 meet in Nagaland. The team's World Cup victory marks a significant milestone for women's cricket in India, showcasing their hard work and determination to achieve success on the global stage.
