TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index gained almost 250 points in late-morning trading, boosted by strength in the energy sector and technology stocks, while U.S. stock markets also climbed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 246.42 points at 30,024.24.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 17.63 points at 47,102.87. The S&P 500 index was up 24.26 points at 6,795.81, while the Nasdaq composite was up 129.61 points at 23,478.25.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.78 cents US compared with 70.97 cents US on Tuesday.

The December crude oil contract was up 14 cents at US$60.70 per barrel.

The December gold contract was up US$31 at US$3,991.50 an ounce.
