The Longmont City Council voted unanimously this week to allow demolition of the century-old house at 824 Kimbark St., siding with property owners and city staff over the Historic Preservation Commission, after months of debate over preservation and feasibility.
The single-story yellow Victorian, built in 1902 within Longmont’s original townsite, was deemed to have “extraordinary historic significance” by the Historic Preservation Commission on Oct. 8, making the property potentially eligible for local landmark designation, which would shield it from demolition.
The owners, however, opposed that classification, citing severe structural deterioration and repair costs they said made rehabilitation impossible, and wanting instead to pursue demolition and build a new house with an accessory
