U.S. aviation safety has been under intense scrutiny this year following a string of high-profile plane crashes and safety incidents.
At least seven people died and 11 were injured when a UPS plane crashed after taking off from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening.
The crash occurred on the same day that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned of chaos as air traffic controllers go unpaid during the extended government shutdown.
“If you bring us to a week from today, Democrats, you will see mass chaos,” he said at a news conference. “You will see mass flight delays, you’ll see mass cancellations, and you may see us close certain parts of the airspace because we just cannot manage it because we don’t have the air traffic controllers.”
