City officials welcomed a Mobile police officer into the first new home built through the recently created Housing Improvement Program, a District 2 initiative that leaders hope will bring new life to once-thriving neighborhoods around the Port City.

Officer Rashawnda Shamell said she watched the 1,450-square-foot shotgun house on Basil Street come into being for months, hoping she would be able to purchase and move into it one day. A Mobile resident of only three years, the first-time homebuyer said she is excited to settle into the Campground neighborhood and begin serving its residents.
