Democrats swept in the Nov. 4 elections, with wins in the New York mayoral race and the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

In the Dems' wins, voters seemed to rebuke President Donald Trump in the first ballot box judgment of his return to power. Trump acknowledged Republicans underperformed, and some conservatives also pointed out the races were in blue states that Trump lost in 2024.

"'TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,' according to Pollsters," Trump wrote on Truth Social, but he did not cite the pollsters.

On Nov. 5, the government shutdown became the longest in American history, surpassing the last one that stretched 35 days in 2019, under Trump's first administration.

How else did Trump react to Tuesday's election results?

Has Donald Trump posted about Zohran Mamdani's win?

Trump did not post anything on social media about the race, but he mentioned it while speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami on Nov. 5.

“On Nov. 5, 2024, the American people reclaimed our government,” Trump said. “We restored our sovereignty − we lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it, don’t worry about it."

Trump had endorsed Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor and longtime Democrat who lost in the primary and ran as an independent. But on Tuesday, New Yorkers chose 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, whose campaign mobilized record-breaking volunteer and voter turnout.

"I’m not a fan of Cuomo one way or the other," Trump said on "60 Minutes" the weekend before the election. "But if it’s gonna be between a bad Democrat and a communist, I’m gonna pick the bad Democrat all the time to be honest with you.”

Mamdani is not a communist but a democratic socialist. Communist societies are not democratic, while democratic socialism exists in European democracies like Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Trump repeated the claim that Mamdani is a communist in his remarks on Nov. 5, and said New Yorkers will flee to Miami.

"I hope it works out for New York, I love New York," he said.

Trump formally endorsed Cuomo in a later Truth Social post and alluded to withholding federal funds to New York if Mamdani won. White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought has already announced $18 billion in infrastructure funds for New York had been put on hold amid the shutdown.

"Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self-professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!" Trump also posted on Truth Social the day of the election.

Mamdani appeared to taunt Trump during his victory speech on election night.

“If there is any way to defeat a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power,” Mamdani said. “This is not only how we stop Trump − it’s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”

Trump on California win in state redistricting battle, Prop 50

In California, voters opted to pass Proposition 50, an effort from Gov. Gavin Newsom to counter Texas' new congressional map aimed at helping Republicans win as many as five more seats in the 2026 midterms. Initial results show the ballot measure passed by a wide margin, and could allow the state to create five new Democratic seats in the 2026 midterms.

"The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED. All 'Mail-In' Ballots, where the Republicans in that State are 'Shut Out,' is under very serious legal and criminal review. STAY TUNED!" Trump said on Truth Social on Nov. 4 as voters were heading to the polls.

At least a dozen states are also moving to change their Congressional boundary lines ahead of the midterms.

Trump did not mention the state battle in his Truth Social posts since the results came out.

What other reaction did Trump share about election night?

In addition to his Truth Social posts, Trump addressed the election results at a White House breakfast with Republican Senators.

"Last night it was not expected to be a victory, it was very Democrat areas, but I don't think it was good for Republicans," Trump said at a breakfast with Republican Senators. "I'm not sure it was good for anybody. ... We learned a lot."

He said they would talk more about what the loss represented and how it relates to the shutdown.

In another post on Truth Social posted late Tuesday after several races had been called, Trump said "…AND SO IT BEGINS!"

The White House did not immediately provide an explanation on what he meant by that.
