OMAHA, Neb. —
A former Nebraska state senator has suspended her campaign for state treasurer.
Julie Slama, who represented District 1 for six years, said the decision came after Joey Spellerberg was appointed to the role on Monday. She announced her campaign that same day.
"After Monday’s announcement of a leadership change in the office and after meeting with Joey Spellerberg today, I believe Joey will bring the energy and perspective needed in the role of State Treasurer," Slama said in a statement.

State Treasurer Tom Briese resigned Monday and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen appointed Spellerberg, who was previously the Fremont mayor, to the role.
Spellerberg, who added that he plans to run in 2026, said property taxes will be one of his top priorities.
