Palestinians in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday welcomed Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayoral race.
Mamdani was elected mayor of New York on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old, who promised to transform city government to restore power to the working class and fight back against a hostile Trump administration.
Mamdani, a longtime advocate of Palestinian rights, has accused Israel of committing genocide and said he would honor an arrest warrant the International Criminal Court issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"It reflects a great uprising among the younger generation of the United States, including the Jewish young generation, against political and social injustice," said Palestine National Initiative General Secretary, Mustafa Barghouti, adding that Mamdani's win was a historic moment for Palestinians.
"It shows that the Palestinian issue has become an internal election issue all over the world, including in the United States of America," he added.
With his win over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, the 34-year-old democratic socialist will soon become the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, the first born in Africa and the youngest mayor in more than a century.
