California voters have approved Proposition 50, based on early election results, meaning newly drawn congressional district maps will be used for several years as part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s strategy to counter Republican-led Texas' mid-decade redistricting.

As of about an hour after polls closed, Prop 50 was leading in early returns with more than 4.2 million yes votes to 2.3 million people voting no, a margin of 65% to 35%, according to the California Secretary of State. Millions more ballots remain to be counted, and the official certified results of the election will be posted by Dec. 12.

Now, some Californians will find themselves in a different congressional district starting with the 2026 election.
