(NewsNation) — Voters turned out for Democrats in the 2025 election, with the economy playing a major role in how votes were cast.
Tuesday was a big night for New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who will be the city's first Muslim mayor. He ran on a message of making life more affordable for New Yorkers, helping to propel him to victory.
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin told NewsNation that rising prices were a big reason Democrats took home wins in New Jersey, Virginia, California, Georgia and Mississippi.
"You deserve an opportunity to actually get ahead in life, not just get by," Martin said. "And unfortunately, in this Trump economy, too many people are just barely getting by."
