POWAY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Tony Blain, the embattled Poway councilmember who was the subject of Tuesday's recall election, has resigned from his position.

The Poway City Council was notified of Blain's resignation, effective immediately, on Wednesday.

The city council will host a special meeting at 11 a.m. on Friday to discuss the process for moving forward.

According to Poway's new policy, which was approved in April, the city will need to hold a special election to fill his vacancy since it occurred within the first 18 months of his four-year term. It will give Poway District 2 voters a chance to select their next councilmember.
