Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan criticized Gov. Wes Moore’s plan to create a new redistricting commission, warning that the move risks undoing years of progress toward fair and independent mapmaking in the state.

“Redistricting should never be used as a political weapon,” Hogan said.

In a statement released Wednesday, Hogan said gerrymandering “is a cancer on our democracy” and argued that Maryland’s progress toward nonpartisan redistricting is now “under threat.”
