BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) — With thousands of families in the Lowcountry impacted by the pause of SNAP benefits, United Way of the Lowcountry is stepping in to help provide meals.

“Do I feed my family, or do I pay my bill? Can I afford my rent? Can I put gas in the car to get to work?” said Virginia Henneberry, the director of major gifts for United Way of the Lowcountry.

Almost 13,000 residents in Beaufort and Jasper County are balancing those hard choices.

They fall under United Way of the Lowcountry’s Asset Limited Constrained and Employed program (ALICE), which is a group that falls between the federal poverty guideline and what it costs to live in Beaufort County.
