The 2025 federal Liberal budget recognizes the critical link between municipal infrastructure and national housing goals, but it falls short of providing the long-term, predictable funding plan that local governments had demanded, says a key Manitoba municipal leader.
Joe Masi, Portage la Prairie City Council Finance Chair and a board director for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), offered a mixed reaction to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first budget, noting that while new investments were welcome, the lack of a clear 10-year funding roadmap remains a major concern.
“If the federal government wants to have 500,000 homes a year over the next 10 years, we don’t see a longer-term plan that was in the budget for infrastructure,” Masi said.
