People in Uganda reacted on Wednesday to Zohran Mamdani winning New York City’s mayoral election, with some expressing joy at his victory.

Ugandan-born Mamdani was elected mayor of New York on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old, who promised to transform city government to restore power to the working class and fight back against a hostile Trump administration.

Ugandan radio presenter Siima Kyakuhaire Sabiti called Mamdani's win "amazing" and added that she felt "really inspired" by his victory.

She said she got to know him when he was part of a rap ensemble and said she was inspired by him when she interviewed him on her show.

Richard Tuwangye, a Ugandan actor and comedian, said Mamdani's win was "inspirational", but cautioned: "For us to expect a lot from Zohran’s win is Ugandans not being able to manage their expectations."

Mamdani lived his early years in Uganda.

He left Uganda at the age of 5 to follow his father, political theorist Mahmood Mamdani, in South Africa and later moved to the United States.

He kept his Ugandan citizenship even after he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.

His mother is filmmaker Mira Nair, whose work has been nominated for an Academy Award.

The family maintains a home in Kampala, to which they regularly return and visited earlier this year to celebrate Mamdani's marriage.
