ATLANTA — A Democratic Socialist cruised to a commanding win in one of Atlanta's City Council races, bringing echoes of Zohran Mamdani's mayoral win in New York City down South.

The candidate, Kelsea Bond, had 64% in unofficial totals posted by the Georgia Secretary of State's Office on Wednesday morning, easily clearing the 50% + 1 vote threshold needed to avoid a runoff.

Bond had 6,715 total votes in the five-person race, according to the unofficial returns, with the next-closest total at 2,154 for Courtney Smith (20.53%).

That compares to two other City Council races that were wide open -- contested among multiple candidates and with no incumbent in the race -- and without as clear a frontrunner. In District 7, no candidate out of five had more than about 27% of the vote, and in
