Trash fees for Portage residents will either go up or down next year depending on how much waste they produce.
The City Council approved a new fee schedule Tuesday that aims to make the trash hauling service self-supporting.
Starting in 2028, the city will no longer receive its $3.6 million share of the county’s income tax because of Senate Enrolled Act 1, the new state law vilified by local government officials for reducing the revenue they rely on to provide services.
Portage used $1 million of that county income tax money each year to pay for landfill fees. Now residents will see a more direct connection to those fees.
