GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island Fire Station 3 was demolished Thursday morning after serving the southwest Grand Island community for 38 years, making way for a new and improved facility to meet the demands of the city’s growing population.

Grand Island’s population has nearly doubled over the last 40 years, requiring public services like fire stations to expand as well. The new station has been fully completed and is already operational, connected to the same Webb Road location.

“This area of Grand Island is growing very rapidly. This new, larger fire station is going to allow us to put more staff in this area of town, which is going to include a staffed ambulance,” said Cory Schmidt, Grand Island Fire Department chief.
