HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - Democrats flipped 29 seats in Connecticut’s municipal elections, with the state Democratic Party chair calling the results historic.

The sweep included several high-profile mayoral races where long-term Republican incumbents were defeated or open seats went to Democratic candidates.

In Bristol, Democrat Ellen Zappo Sassu defeated incumbent Mayor Jeff Caggiano. In New Britain, Democrat Bobby Sanchez won an open seat race against Sharon Beloin Saavedra for the position vacated by long-term incumbent Mayor Erin Stewart. In Ansonia, Democrat Frank Tyszka defeated six-term Republican Mayor David Cassetti.

Roberto Alves, chair of the Connecticut Democratic Party, said the results reflected strong Democratic engagement on key issues.
