NEW ORLEANS — The University of New Orleans is preparing to join the LSU System in what is being called a “bold next chapter” for the Lakefront campus.
The official transition will take place on July 1, 2026, when responsibility for UNO moves from the University of Louisiana System to the LSU System. Leaders say the change is designed to revitalize enrollment, modernize academics, and reinvest in campus life and athletics.
University officials say the Lakefront campus has faced years of declining enrollment — from about 17,000 students before Hurricane Katrina to roughly 5,000 today.
The move to the LSU System follows efforts by UNO and state lawmakers to stabilize operations, including a $20 million investment approved during the 2024 legislative session.
