HOUSTON — Some federal workers are feeling the stress of missing paychecks while trying to cover basic expenses during the government shutdown. Financial expert and CPA Kemberly Washington said there are a few smart steps you can take right now to protect your finances and avoid long-term damage.
“Even missing one paycheck can put a strain on your wallet and your budget. You're going to have to make some really hard decisions of really looking at that budget and determining what are some things that you need versus what are some things that you want,” Washington said.
She also encourages anyone struggling to reach out for help early. Organizations like United Way and Catholic Charities are offering rental and utility assistance to furloughed federal workers, but you need to apply.
