MINNEAPOLIS — Mayor Jacob Frey needed two rounds of voting to win re-election this week under the city's ranked-choice voting system.

Ultimately, though, the 44-year-old incumbent earned his third term with a six-point victory over State Sen. Omar Fateh, a self-described Democratic Socialist who mounted a spirited challenge to the mayor over the past several months.

“I don’t think I’m the one to be a pundit about what message they’re sending ideologically,” Frey said. “I do think the message that has been sent loud and clear is that we have to love our city more than our ideology.”
