An event hosted by the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) student group Students Supporting Israel was interrupted on Wednesday afternoon by a group of anti-Israel demonstrators. The event featured speakers from the Israel Defense Forces as part of an annual campus tour. Around 2 p.m., the Toronto Police Service reported on X that officers were responding to incidents involving demonstrators who had entered a building at Elm and Bay streets, close to the TMU campus. The police noted that at least one person had reported injuries. A female TMU student, who chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, described her experience as she attempted to enter the event. She stated that a young woman confronted her, shouting and recording her. The student could not identify the protester, as the individual was fully masked except for her eyes. The protest was organized by another TMU student group, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). An Instagram post from SJP outlined the details of the protest, claiming, "TMU has once again allowed a registered student group to invite Zionist murderers to our city. Students will not have it." TMU administration was not available for comment at the time of publication. The anonymous student expressed support for SJP's right to protest but condemned the violent approach. "It was chaos outside. The police were taking the protesters out, but they were pushing against the police to get back in," she said. Although she did not witness any arrests, she urged TMU's administration to address the violence. "I would like the university to take action against these students. The SJP should not be allowed to act this way," she added. Hillel Ontario, which represents Jewish students on campuses, expressed concern for student safety following the protest. Jay Solomon, the organization’s chief advancement officer, stated that many students approached Hillel with worries about their safety. He noted that since the October 7 attacks in Israel, Jewish students have faced increasing anti-Semitism. "Jewish students need to have a safe place to learn," he said, calling on TMU to hold those responsible for the protest accountable. An X post from Am Yisrael Chai later claimed that a "masked mob" had stormed the private event, resulting in injuries from shattered glass and several students needing hospitalization. However, these claims and accompanying videos have not been verified. Additionally, a Wednesday afternoon Instagram post by a user named Michael Kaminisky purportedly showed a bleeding wrist of someone injured during the protest, but this video remains unconfirmed. The post alleged that "masked attackers have violently caused serious injury to soldiers who were invited as guest speakers by @ssi_tmu as part of the annual IDF soldiers speaking on campus tour." The Toronto Police Service has been contacted for further comment regarding the incident.
