PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The demolition of the westbound Washington Bridge is in its final stretch, and project manager Anthony Pompei said the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is on track to wrap up by the end of this year.
"We're down almost to the mud line now," he said. "It's just the last few weeks here until we get to the finish line, removing the last couple feet of the piers within the river."
The latest Washington Bridge snapshot report shows $77.9 million of the $97.9 million demolition budget has been spent.
But Target 12 had questions for RIDOT about the $3.8 million allocated toward "the cost of properly disposing of contaminated material."
A spokesperson for RIDOT said the contaminants in question included arsenic and semi-volatile organic compounds.
