Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist from Queens, has been elected mayor of New York City in a victory that has drawn international headlines and set the stage for his ambitious agenda to reshape the city. One of his ideas takes a cue from Quebec.

The 34-year-old won the support of more than a million New Yorkers, ending a hard-fought campaign that turned him from a little-known assemblyman into the next leader of the largest city in the U.S. He defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo, 67, who ran as an independent, and Republican radio host Curtis Sliwa, 71.
