Anthony Albanese says he is confident Australia's social media age limit will be a success and that people will comply "voluntarily" over time, amid uncertainty about how tech companies will communicate the looming changes.

The prime minister has moved to allay concerns parents will be left on their own, explaining the ban from next month, pointing to resources delivered through schools and the eSafety Commission website as important sources of information for families.

Tech companies are responsible for enforcement of the age limit, but Mr Albanese has also emphasised the benefit of the laws "empowering" parents to speak to their younger children about social media access.
