Few places rely on resources quite like Western Australia, from gas to iron ore, the state has built its financial prosperity on what lies beneath the ground.

But in the process of finding the balance between environmental protection and economic opportunity, the state government moved to make 98 per cent of the Kimberley "frack free".

However, this controversial mining technique is still permitted in parts of the Kimberley and Mid West under strict regulations and approval processes.

Throughout the last seven years, environmental groups have been calling for a total statewide ban, bringing the issue back into the spotlight ahead of this weekend's Labor state conference in Fremantle.
