OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - While SNAP benefits have stopped for thousands of families, one care center is working to fill that gap for senior citizens.
Dawn Garrett is seeing the impact of food insecurity for seniors up close at Home Care Plus.
“A lot of our members depend on that. That’s how they go to the store to get their groceries,” said Garrett. “And without that assistance they are put in a bad spot to where they might not be able to afford groceries on their own.”
The care center is hosting a food drive, inviting the community to drop off canned food that workers will bring to the people they serve. The vast majority of Garrett’s clients need food assistance.
“I would say a good five have called. Probably a good 80 percent of them will show up and get some food,” said Garrett.
