Wilmington's Plummer Community Corrections Center is currently scheduled to close by March 2026, but a former inmates are not pleased.
Department of Correction officials offered a presentation for residents during Wednesday's Wilmington City Council Intergovernmental Committee meeting, attempting to explain the need for the closure.
DOC Commissioner Terra Taylor said Level IV inmate populations are low, with the Plummer Community Corrections Center (PCCC) holding 68 out of a capacity of 250 people as of Wednesday.
"We look at re-entry very differently than we did in the 1980s and 1990s. We start re-entry on day 1."
The re-entry process has allowed the state to close the Morris Community Corrections Center in Dover and the Sussex Work Release Center in Georgetown.
