KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

A former Catholic Charities executive is accused of stealing more than $150,000 by using church-issued credit cards to buy hundreds of gift cards for personal use.

Prosecutors say Jeremy Lillig, 44, fraudulently obtained and activated 436 Visa gift cards worth $155,050 while serving as executive director of the Bright Futures Fund and director of stewardship for the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City–St. Joseph. Advertisement

The indictment alleges Lillig bought the gift cards between 2017 and 2021 under the pretense of legitimate expenses funded through a Kauffman Foundation grant, then falsified monthly expense reports to conceal the scheme.

Lillig pleaded not guilty Tuesday in federal court to one count of wire fraud.
