Rockaway Township will promote a veteran police officer to the rank of sergeant and pay him $81,000 after he won a lawsuit that alleged he was passed over because of his role in union negotiations.

In his lawsuit, filed in 2023 , Greg Albert said he was denied while two other officers were elevated to sergeant not long after the police union agreed to a new contract following 18 months of bitter negotiations. Albert was the department's representative to the state PBA, which represented 42 of the 53 members on the force.

On Oct. 23, a jury sided with Albert by a 5-1 count in Morris County Superior Court before Judge Vijayant Pawar on the main count: Did Rockaway Township violate his rights as a union representative?

Along with the promotion, the jury unanimously awarded Albert $36
