The Executive Director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), Sylvester Namiwa, has urged the new Minister of Mines, Jean Mathanga, to review all mining contracts signed by the previous government with various companies.

Namiwa alleged that the awarding of the Portland Cement mine, owned by Chinese nationals in the Ng’onga area of Balaka, was marred by irregularities and possible fraud.

He further stated that the compensation process for residents living near the Portland Cement mine in Balaka has not been handled properly, as the company began construction on people’s land before compensation payments were made.
