Seven changes for drivers could be coming for drivers in the Labour Party Autumn Budget. It comes amid swirling reports on Thursday that Chancellor Rachel Reeves will impose a new 3p pay-per-mile car tax on road users from November 26.

The Government will include plans to introduce a new pay-per-mile tax for electric vehicles (EVs) in the Autumn Budget. It is suggested that zero-emission cars will attract a new charge of 3 pence per mile in addition to existing road taxes, with the Treasury arguing it is a question of fairness to petrol and diesel drivers.

Mairéad Warren de Búrca, managing director in consultancy Alvarez & Marsal’s indirect tax, said: “A per-mile charge for EVs would mark a major shift in how the Treasury raises revenue from road users.
